Practical tips for new international faculty of the 2012-13 school year...

  • Verify that an affordable residence is waiting for you.

  • It may be easier to change some money before arriving at the Raleigh airport since there is only 1 currency exchange there.

  • Look for a liaison to meet you at the airport with a welcome package that includes social security forms (no paycheck without a social security number).

  • Be sure transportation (a car) has been arranged.

  • Prepare for a small-town lifestyle by visiting Duplin County and/or Eastern NC via Internet.

  • View this website often to see what is happening for international faculty in Duplin County Schools.

  • Plan ahead if you want to stay longer than one school year. See http://www.uscis.gov/for information on work permits.
  • Southern Bank has granted home mortgages with a 2-year credit history from your home country; the State Employees Credit Union has also granted loans to international teachers.

  • Attend an orientation session before US arrival to perhaps view a video of the area and schools as well as to discuss visa issues (dependents, extension procedures).

  • Schedule an orientation session after arrival with the Human Resources and Payroll Departments for clarification of salaries, paychecks, extensions of work permits, and taxes (including how to file to get taxes back).
