Welcome to the home of the James Kenan High School “Tigers.” We invite you to visit our school and to share in our vision, “to become a school of excellence whose students and staff value diversity; exhibit a love for learning; and are recognized for their talents, achievements, and character.”
North Carolina’s school accountability program, the ABC’s of public education, provides some specific information about James Kenan High School, but this information only tells part of the story. There are other statistics available that are vital to help families gain knowledge about our school and school district.
The North Carolina School Report Card is a valuable resource for parents and the community to use in understanding the progress and status of the school system and the individual schools. Data related to student achievement, parent involvement, safe and orderly school, class size, teacher qualifications, and Average Yearly Progress (AYP) are on the school report card.

Parents and the community are encouraged to take time to review the report card information and to consider ways that they can help our school and students achieve success. The support and commitment of teachers, parents, and the community to high expectations and excellence in education are crucial to high student performance and the success of James Kenan High School. Our mission is to partner with our school community and create a standard of excellence; provide a safe, orderly, and caring learning environment and prepare all students to become competitive, productive, and law-abiding citizens in a globally changing society.

James Kenan High School has been recognized by U. S. News and World Report as a top school, meeting the needs of all students not just those who are college bound. We continue to have a high level of expectations for our students and are in the top 10% of schools in the state in terms of effectiveness. During the 2011-2012 school year, James Kenan High School experienced a 10 percentage point increase in its cohort graduation rate. As evidence to our commitment to academic excellence, our student’s SAT scores continue to rise in all areas: Reading, Writing, and Mathematics.
