Student Dress Code

Policy

• Duplin County Schools prohibits any dress that will be disruptive to the educational

environment and may be a hazard to the health, safety, and well being of its students. Any

clothing or accessories that depicts gang-related activities or displays words or images directly

or indirectly advertising illegal or prohibited substances or which promote the use of these

products or which are profane, obscene, or sexually suggestive are strictly prohibited.

Appropriate attire must be consistent with the following:

Shirts/Blouses

• Must completely cover chest, midriff, and back

• Sleeveless blouses must be at least 2" in width, blouses must not be sheer or see through,

and have no visible cleavage

• No cut outs exposing body above the knee level

• No overly tight clothing

• Shirts will be worn at all times, this includes during physical education class

• All male students in grades 4-12 are required to tuck in shirts

• All female students are required to tuck in any oversized t-shirts

Skirts, Dresses, Shorts

• The hem of dresses, skirts, and shorts must be below the fingertips when the arms are

extended downward

Pants/Slacks

• NO SAGGING PANTS!

• No cut outs or excessively ragged pants/clothing

• No excessively tight pants including Spandex/biker pants

• No low cut pants revealing skin in the buttocks or groin area

• No underwear showing

Accessories (including jewelry)

• No long key or waist chains that could be perceived or used as a weapon

• No unfastened bib overalls or unfastened belts

• No hats or headgear shall be worn inside the school building unless they are used for

religious purposes

• No sunglasses shall be worn inside the school building

• No spiked wrist bands, spiked belts, and knuckle rings

• No picks or hair combs

• No visible undergarments

• No visible body piercing, excluding earrings

Shoes

• Shoes must be worn at all times according to state law

• No bedroom or house shoes

Athletic Attire:

• No athletic uniforms shall be worn during the regular school day except for special

occasions as granted by the principal

• Athletes will be expected to adhere to the coaches recommendations for dress in their

particular sport

• Students are required to "dress out" in designated physical education attire (Suggest students

purchase physical education uniforms)

Gang Related Paraphernalia:

• No article of clothing that is reported by local law enforcement as being gang related

• No symbols, emblems, jewelry, visible tattoos, body markings clothing, or attire frequently

associated with or promoting gang affiliation

• A list of prohibited "gang-related paraphernalia" will be kept in a log by the school

administration and will be routinely updated and a list of such items provided to the students

• All confiscated gang attire will be turned over to the Duplin County Sheriff's Office and not

returned to the student

• Any tattoo associated with a gang must be covered at all times including physical education

Application of this dress code applies during the school day, at any school related function or any

event where the student is a representative of the school. This includes academic and extra

curriculum activities such as, induction ceremonies, athletic banquet, athletic practices and

events.

Procedure

• Consequences for dress code infractions will include a call to the parent or legal guardian to

bring proper clothing to the school

• Students will not be permitted to attend class until appropriate clothing is displayed as

indicated

• School administration may provide proper attire in the event the parent is unable to be

contacted

• School administration may place the student in an alternative learning setting (ISS) until

proper attire is displayed

• 1st period teachers should refer any infractions to the school administration.

• Repeated violations will result in insubordination, which may result in out-of-school
