Learning, Leading, Succeeding

Agribusiness Academy students talking with a guest speaker.

The Duplin Agribusiness Academy (DAA) had a very active and engaging year offering a wide range of activities aimed at providing students with valuable experiences and opportunities. DAA members attended a field trip to the University of Mount Olive and NC State University that provided students with firsthand exposure to agricultural practices in an educational institution. We visited the 1,000-acre farm of former NFL player Jason Brown at First Fruit Farms and participated in Trade Talks/Lunch and Learn, which engaged students with professionals from House of Raeford and Duplin County Cooperative Extension. The Southern Farm Show exposed students to the latest technologies, and our DCS Women in Ag event provided 100 female high school students an opportunity to converse with agricultural business leaders from across the state to learn about job opportunities in the industry. Overall, these activities highlight the comprehensive approach of the Duplin Agribusiness Academy in providing students with practical experiences, industry exposure, and opportunities for personal and professional growth within the field of agriculture.

The staff at Warsaw Elementary share a common goal, which is to ensure success for all students. This school is amazing in that we all work as a team to make sure that every student has the opportunity to be successful and grow year after year. When staff members arrive to work daily with a positive attitude and spread that attitude onto fellow staff members and students, the whole atmosphere transforms into a learning environment that is inspiring and motivational. As a teacher, I believe that building relationships is crucial to a student's success. I also believe that students do well in an environment in which they feel safe and are allowed to express their thoughts and ideas.

Wallace Elementary School is unique for many reasons. We have so many good teachers and staff members who really work hard to prepare our kids for college.

The school has so many opportunities that allow my kids to do their best in class. The kids love all the awards that they are able to earn. They also enjoy being in the Beta Club and all of the other clubs and events that the staff creates for them.

Our Future Teachers Club promotes the teaching profession and all related careers. The goal is to increase the number of licensed teachers for Duplin County Schools. Members of the Future Teachers Club have the opportunity to serve in classrooms as student assistants. Their duties may range from copying papers, making bulletin boards, reading to students, or working in small groups with students on academic skills. This past February, Rose Hill Magnolia Elementary collaborated with Warsaw Elementary for a unique visit to UNC-Wilmington’s Watson School of Education. Students were greeted by the Watson Recruitment Specialist and Duplin County native, Mr. Dean Heath, who provided a tour and information on various educational and scholarship opportunities afforded to individuals interested in the field of education. Anna Marie Jones, FTC member shares,“The Future Teacher Club has taught me so much. The trip to UNCW’s School of Education impacted me greatly by showing me that many other teens like myself have an interest in education and that there can be a future for me in that field.”

Duplin County Schools is preparing me for a future career in healthcare by allowing me to be a part of the Health Sciences Academy pathway through Career and Technical Education (CTE). I really enjoy my math and chemistry classes at North Duplin Jr./Sr. because they are both mathematical courses. I also like Health Science courses because I like learning about the different body systems and how to help people in emergency situations. North Duplin Jr./Sr. is special because I have made so many friends. I have learned so much while being in school here.

North Duplin Elementary is a community school! While we are small, our outreach is huge. I graduated from North Duplin along with many of my colleagues that teach with me. I think this speaks to the sense of community because so many of us want to come back and be a part of the learning opportunities and the sense of family our small school creates for our students. Even though DCS is a smaller district with fewer resources, our administration, staff, and community all work closely together to provide for the needs of students in every way possible. DCS is always willing to fight for what is best for students! Through our extensive STEAMA program and educational field trips, we provide career paths and opportunities that expand our student’s knowledge. While I want my students to learn our curriculum, I also strive to teach them to be caring, hard-working, and respectful little people who carry those same traits into adulthood.
