Learning, Leading, Succeeding

Duplin County Schools offer opportunities to students, such as the Duplin Agribusiness and Health Science Academies, that empower us to take ownership of our learning and connect us with others in the process. At DECHS, I love having the flexibility to work on assignments on my own time. That allows me to manage my schedule and be able to study in ways that I learn best. But that does not mean I am doing it alone. There is always the option to collaborate with classmates or brainstorm ideas with teachers. Whether it is independent study time or group projects, Duplin Early College empowers us to take ownership of our learning and connect with others in the process.

I feel that my Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes have prepared me the most for my future goals. I know that other subjects are important, but I really enjoy my English classes the most. The DCS Center of Opportunity shows us the importance of learning, allows us to grow in our own unique ways, and helps us value our education.

Chinquapin is a small school with a big heart. Students know they’re loved from the moment they walk in our doors and that encourages and enables them to learn!DCS feels like home - this small community boasts strong roots! Students see adults who once learned in the same classrooms where they sit now, go on to lead and succeed. I've been blessed to work with student-leaders to form the COM Squad. They take charge of school communication and events ranging from pep rallies to Read Across America week. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for our COM Squad!

The Future Teachers Club (FTC) was started last year to promote teaching careers and encourage students to become involved with activities in our school. The FTC meets twice a month to talk about concerns in our school, community involvement, and the path they will need to take in high school and college in order to become a teacher. This year the Future Teachers Club along with the middle school Leadership Team planned the BES Saint Patrick’s Day 5k. Students partnered with businesses to gain community support for the race. The students set up the 5k and worked at water stations and assisted students around the course. The Future Teachers Club is growing and many students are excited about the prospect of becoming teachers here in Duplin County.

Duplin County Schools is unique because of its loving, caring, and family-oriented atmosphere. Everyone is so friendly and supportive and it’s like having a big extended family.  DCS provides opportunities for my child to learn important values like teamwork, empathy, and inclusivity. It is truly heartwarming to see my child thrive in such a positive family environment. Not only has my child thrived at learning, but has had the opportunity to discover new interests by engaging in extracurricular activities and participating in enriching field trips

As part of the Curriculum Innovation Department, the Beginning Teacher Support Program provides support and professional development for all beginning teachers (BTs) in their first three years of teaching. In addition, an integrated summer orientation equips first-year BTs to begin the school year with ongoing, personalized professional development throughout the year. Beginning Teacher Coordinators are assigned to each school and help guide mentors and new teachers as they grow professionally. Consistent classroom support designed to meet the unique needs of our BTs is crucial to the success and retention of our teachers.
