Health Sciences Academy Curriculum

4 CAREER PATHWAYS

 
Currently, HSA students have 4 plans of study options from which to choose.  Each plan is unique and provides flexibility for the individual needs of the students. The intention is to provide a solid academic background including career and technical skills that enable students to experience professional and personal success in the pursuit of a health care career. 
 

COLLEGE TRANSFER PATHWAY:  ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCE 

Recommended but not limited to students seeking to go to a community college before transferring to a 4-year university in any or unknown major.

Take at least 5 of the courses listed in this pathway.  Two of the courses must be Math and/or Science courses (Examples:  Biology 111 and Mat 171 or Biology 111 and Biology 112 or other combinations of math and science).  Please note that a student cannot take Biology with Chemistry now.  ACA DOES NOT COUNT AS 1 OF THE 5 COURSES.

COLLEGE TRANSFER PATHWAY:  ASSOC. DEGREE NURSING 

Recommended for students who intend to obtain a nursing degree at a community college before transferring for a BSN at a 4-year institution.

Take at least 5 of the courses listed in this pathway.  Two of the courses must be Biology 168 and 169.  Psychology 150 and 241 are highly recommended.  Please limit the Humanities and Fine Arts Courses to 1 (3 hours).  NOTE THAT ACA DOES NOT COUNT AS 1 OF THE 5 COURSES.  Also note that at this time a student is unable to take a college transfer math in this pathway.  

JSCC ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING/PRACTICAL NURSING 

Recommended for students who intend to pursue an associate degree in nursing.

Upon successful completion of this pathway the student will earn 50 points on his/her nursing school application at JSCC.   See attached course layout.  Students earn 24 semester hours of credit.  Please note that the layout takes into consideration varying student levels and the various scheduling practices of each school.

6 COURSE PATHWAY

Recommended but not limited to students seeking to go to a 4-year university immediately after high school.

Take at least 6 courses from the recommended course list.  Please remind students that this is the minimum and they should be working to take as many of the courses as possible.   See attached list of courses.  Courses may be added or deleted from this list each year.
