Requirements & Expectations

8th grade requirements

  1. Apply to the Academy during the spring semester of the 8th grade.
  2. Sign up with your high school counselor to take Foundations of Health Science in your 9th grade year.
  3. Maintain good grades and discipline for the remainder of the school year.
  4. AFTER YOUR 8th grade Promotion Ceremony, begin earning the 25 hours of volunteer service required during the 9th grade year. 

9th grade requirements

  1. Take required health sciences courses based on your chosen plan of study.
  2. Complete 25 hours of volunteer/community service by the April deadline.
  3. Be a good representative of the academy. Maintain a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) and keep a clean discipline record (no category ll or lll).
  4. Attend as many program activities and events as possible.   

10th grade requirements

  1. Take the required health sciences academy courses and/or other courses based on your chosen plan of study.
  2.  
  3. Maintain at minimum an overall 3.0 weighted GPA (grade point average).
  4. If you are in one of the College Transfer Pathways (Associate in Science or the College Transfer/Associate Degree Nursing), demonstrate college readiness on an appropriate assessment (Ex. PSAT or Pre-ACT). If your scores don't qualify you, see your school counselor or academy coordinator about your options.
  5. Complete an additional 25 hours of volunteer/community service by the April deadline for a minimum of 50 cumulative hours.
  6. Update your portfolio in Xello (Talk to your School's Career Development Coordinator).   
  7. Be a good representative of the academy. Keep a clean discipline record (no category ll or lll).

11th grade requirements

  1. Based on your plan of study, enroll in the appropriate AP level or CCP (Career and College Promise through JSCC) courses.
  2. Maintain at minimum a 2.0 GPA on all college coursework and an overall 3.0 weighted GPA.
  3. Meet minimum attendance requirements in your college coursework as required in your high school courses.
  4. Complete an additional 25 hours of volunteer/community service by the April deadline for a minimum of 75 cumulative hours by the end of junior year.
  5. Be a good representative of the academy. Keep a clean discipline record (no category ll or lll).

12th grade requirements

  1. Take required health sciences academy courses and/or appropriate college courses based on your plan of study.
  2. Maintain at minimum a 2.0 GPA on all college coursework and at least an overall 3.0 weighted GPA.
  3. Meet minimum attendance requirements in your college coursework as required in your high school courses.
  4. Complete an additional 25 hours of volunteer/community service by the April deadline for a minimum of 100 cumulative hours
  5. Be a good representative of the academy. Keep a clean discipline record (no category ll or lll).

**To be designated an HSA Completer, by the end of the senior year, students should have completed their chosen plan of study and obtained a minimum of 100 hours in volunteer/community service with 25 in a clinical setting.

**Students not abiding by these requirements will be removed from the Health Sciences Academy.
