Migrant Education
The mission of the Migrant Education Program is to help migrant children and youth meet high academic challenges by overcoming the obstacles created by frequent moves, educational disruption, cultural and language differences, and health-related problems.
A large percentage of Duplin County's economy comes from agriculture. Therefore, a large number of workers come to Duplin County with their families in search of seasonal work (picking tobacco, blueberries, sweet potatoes, etc.). These families including out-of-school youth (OSY) who move frequently. These moves can put children at risk of staying behind in their studies or not attending school at all. Our goal is to help the children of these migrant families so that someday they will graduate from school.
The program identifies and recruits migratory students and out-of-school youth (OSY) in order to provide high quality supplemental and support services. These services include, but are not limited to, interpreting, tutoring, provide school materials, refer students for other school services, refer students for medical services, and provide English classes. The program also helps with fostering coordination among schools, agencies, organizations, and businesses to assist migrant families. The Migrant Education program serves all migrant students and OSY in the Duplin County School District.
