Substitute Teacher Resources

HOW TO BECOME A SUBSTITUTE TEACHER WITH DUPLIN COUNTY SCHOOLS
1. Complete Effective Teacher Training. EFT is offered at most community colleges.
2. Complete an online application. Click here to apply
If you have problems with the application, please contact Kim Matthis at 910 296-6626.
3. Choose a school that will serve as your "home school" and take the school bookkeeper the following information:
Effective Teacher Training Certificate, High School Transcript and/or a copy of your High School Diploma
Current TB Test, NC Drivers License and Social Security Card
4. The bookkeeper will forward to the Human Resources Office your request to substitute. A background check will be completed and, if approved, HR will submit the substitute request for board approval.
5. All applicants must attend substitute orientation. The orientation is held in the Central Office Board Room on the dates listed below. You cannot substitute until the orientation is completed.
6. Applicants who have been approved to substitute will receive an approval letter from Human Resources and an email from Frontline to create a substitute account.
Substitute orientation will be offered on the dates listed below and is
held in the Central Office Board Room. Please contact Kim Matthis with Human Resources at 910 296-6626 to register for the training. Training will begin promptly at 10:00am.
August 20, 2026 - Session at 10:00am and 2:00pm
September 17, 2026, October 15, 2026, January 21, 2027,
February 18, 2027 and March 18, 2027
Completion of Effective Teacher Training is required before attending the orientation

Effective Teacher Training
is offered through any North Carolina community college. If you are interested in taking the class at James Sprunt Community College, please contact Hannah Smith at 910-275-6200 for class offerings or register online at James Sprunt Community College Continuing Education Department.
