• In order to provide academic and behavior support to schools, Duplin County Schools uses a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). It provides interventions and support that can be adjusted depending on a student’s progress. MTSS is NOT special education, but a way to intervene early so that students can be successful.


    Multi-Tiered System of Support or MTSS focuses on high quality instruction by providing learning and behavioral supports such as RtI and PBIS. These systems advocate the use of a problem-solving model to make data based decisions.

    Responsiveness to Instruction or RtI uses responses to research-based approaches as an academic prevention and intervention model.

    Positive Behavior Intervention and Support or PBIS focuses on building an infrastructure for preventative behavior instruction as well as interventions for groups and individuals.





    Each level provides a more intensive “tier” of support.

    Tier 3 includes intensive interventions to meet the needs of individual students.

    Tier 2 provides additional instruction targeted to meet the needs of struggling students.

    Tier 1 is the high-quality instruction provided to all students in general education classrooms.
