KENANSVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA – February 13, 2018- Three Duplin County Schools students were recognized by the Duplin Rotary as Students of the Month for February. Daniel Alvarez and Sofia Sosa along with their guests and Rotary members enjoyed a luncheon at the Country Squire Restaurant in Warsaw before each student shared with the club his or her accomplishments and plans for the future. Kristoff Smith, who was selected as the James Kenan Student of the Month, was unable to attend.
Duplin Early College High School (DECHS) selected Daniel Alvarez as the Rotary Student of the Month for February. He gave thanks to the entire staff of DECHS for all they have done for him, noting they strongly encourage all students to do their best. He said everyone at the school, including his friends, are very supportive and kind to one another. He is involved in the Outdoors Club, is part of James Sprunt Community College’s Scholarly Men of Success and plays intramural soccer for JSCC. He said his favorite teacher ever was Edward Parrish, his middle school social studies teacher. He said Mr. Parrish was always very supportive and made class interesting. Daniel noted that he is the oldest in a large family and that he has grown up in a Christian atmosphere, always putting God first in all decisions. He would like to attend William Peace University in Raleigh and major in video game simulation. In ten years he hopes to be working in video game design. He also hopes to help others in any way he can as others have done for him. Daniel is the son of Jose and Adriana Alvarez.
Sofia Sosa is North Duplin Jr/Sr High School’s Rotary Student of the Month for February. She loves her school because it is small and the atmosphere is very friendly. She is very involved in Marching and Concert Band, with the flute being her instrument of choice. She is also a member of the Beta Club, Science Club, International Club and the Duplin Health Sciences Academy. She lists band instructor Danielle Hoffer as her favorite teacher because “she brought the spring back to the band programs” at NDJS. Sofia hopes to attend East Carolina University and major in nursing and minor in music. She would like to eventually work in pediatrics because she loves children. She says the most influential person in her life is her grandmother because she helped raise her while her parents worked. She said her grandmother really focused on helping her her stay connected to her culture. Sofia is the daughter of Carlos and Edith Sosa.
Duplin County Schools is thankful to the Duplin Rotary for sponsoring this student recognition program.
(The East Duplin Student of the Month will be recognized next month due to a conflict.)
