STEAMA- personalizing learning for students and customizing education for Duplin County
The Class of 2018 has passed one of the most important milestones of their lives. Seeing graduates walk across the stage and earn their diplomas is a highlight every school year. Our graduates will pursue post-secondary education, join the workforce, or enlist in the military. Regardless of their next steps, they will carry with them a strong foundation that includes knowledge, values and a sense of who they are and from where they have come. It has been a blessing to watch them learn and to grow alongside them throughout this journey.
While they are eagerly moving on to the next chapter in their lives, we are excited about the future of Duplin County Schools. The Board of Education approved during its last meeting STEAMA (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math, and Agriculture), our renewed commitment to continue to personalize career pathways for our students through curriculum integration.
A first in the nation to our knowledge, we are moving from STEM to STEAMA which will further unite us cross all disciplines and celebrate who we are and all of the things that make Duplin County so special. STEAMA is not an initiative or mandate for our teachers. It represents a new attitude and a renewed commitment toward integrating and expanding career pathways for students. Most importantly, it highlights art and agricultural occupations which we also strongly value. We want to allow our teachers’ creativity and passion to flourish. As I have said before, success is not just measured by standardized test scores. Success encompasses how students think, what they can create, and what they learn from their mistakes. Duplin County Schools values each child’s talents, interests, and progress.
Our teachers will still teach the required standards and promote career and college readiness while embracing all that STEAMA has to offer. The all-inclusive and the creative freedom, hands-on, product-driven nature of it will foster state-measured success. We are truly personalizing for students and customizing for our district.
Our challenge as a school system is to keep pressing forward to help ensure we offer in-depth, relevant courses and experiences for all of our students. STEAMA will help us meet this challenge and is something on which we can all build. We will continue to partner with local businesses and post-secondary institutions, combining beneficial and effective strategies with maximum creative freedom for students, teachers, and principals. We will stay aligned to our 5-Year Strategic Plan and serve with a sense of urgency, for our students are why we are here.
We are so excited about what the future holds for Duplin County Schools. More information about STEAMA is forthcoming as our teachers lead the way.
To the Class of 2018, we wish you nothing but the very best. To God be all the glory for each of you and all who have seen you to this milestone!
