Duplin County Schools Celebrates School Transportation
KENANSVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA- February 15, 2019- Schools across America are celebrating school transportation this month through the “Love the Bus” program promoted by the American School Bus Council. This week (February 11-15) is extra special in North Carolina as we celebrate School Bus Driver Appreciation Week.
Duplin County Schools commends bus drivers, transportation staff, and school administrators who are the driving force that safely transports approximately 5,300 students to and from school. Our bus drivers carefully navigate 8,127 miles of Duplin County roadways each day to complete their mission of providing safe and efficient transportation to DCS students. Duplin County Schools has 129 buses on the road daily.
“Duplin County has by far the best school bus drivers in the nation,” explains Assistant Director of Transportation/TIMS Coordinator, Karen Sholar. “They are always willing to go the extra mile. They love what they do and it shows. We also have a great team at the school bus garage that keeps our school buses safe and well-maintained. Their commitment to safe transportation and an efficient operation is top-notch. I am very happy to be a part of the DCS Transportation Department. We are very excited to say we have ‘rolled safe’ all year. This is our second year in a row with no major incidents. Safety of students and drivers is always our primary concern.”
“Our bus drivers and our entire transportation team are among the best in the state,” says Superintendent Dr. Austin Obasohan. “Ms. Karen Sholar, our Assistant Director/TIMS coordinator safely and efficiently schedules routes for over 5,000 bus riders. I want to commend her and each member of the team for all they do. We cannot thank our drivers and transportation team enough for all they do.”
The “Love the Bus” program, founded in 2007 and coordinated by the American School Bus Council (ASBC), is celebrated across the country throughout the month of February as a way to raise awareness and appreciation for the hundreds of thousands of school bus drivers, monitors and transportation personnel who are responsible for transporting millions of children to and from school each day.
The ASBC encourages parents, teachers, and students to visit the program’s website, www.LoveTheBus.com to share stories about their favorite bus drivers and make interactive valentines to email or print and give to their bus driver around Valentine’s Day or during the month. Educators may also log on to www.LoveTheBus.com to download an educator’s toolkit, which provides details on incorporating “Love the Bus” into their lesson plans.
