Duplin Rotary honors April Students of the Month

KENANSVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA –  April 12, 2019- Duplin Rotary recognized Duplin County Schools students as Students of the Month for April at this week’s meeting.  Students, along with guests and Rotary members, enjoyed a luncheon at the Country Squire Restaurant in Warsaw before each student shared with the club his or her accomplishments and plans for the future.

Alexander Barajas is the Rotary Student of the Month for Duplin Early College High School.  He enjoys playing sports and is active in the Intramural club. Alexander holds many leadership roles as he is President of the Outdoors Club at Duplin Early College High School and he is the youth group leader at his church.  The most influential people in his life have been his grandfather, who always told him to aim for the stars and Mr. Casey Knowles, his favorite teacher at Duplin Early College High School, who has made him a better leader and speaker.  Alexander enjoys attending Duplin Early College High School because of the small school atmosphere where all staff members are caring and helpful. He is undecided on where he will attend college; however, Alexander has been accepted to Western Carolina University and Appalachian State University.  In 10 years he hopes to be back in Duplin County with a Career in Construction Management. Alexander is the son of Israel and Susana Barajas.

Rotary Student of the Month for East Duplin High School is Kristen Foy.  She is very involved in volunteering in and around her local community. Kristen volunteers at the hospital, school blood drives, and at her church.  She has also participated in the Roadside cleanup through the Health Sciences Academy. She is passionate about Health Sciences and plans to attend Cape Fear Community College to study Dental Hygiene.  Kristen loves East Duplin because she feels like she can go to any teacher for help and everyone is very close and supportive. Her favorite teacher is her Health Sciences teacher, Amanda Jenkins, because she feels as though Mrs. Jenkins has encouraged her to do her best and supported her in her goals.  Kristen attributes her success to many people including her parents, other family members, teachers and friends. In 10 years, Kristen plans to have a career in Dental Hygiene and to be living in Duplin County. She is the daughter of David and Lisa Foy.

Julious Houston is James Kenan High School’s Rotary Student of the Month.  Julious plans to attend North Carolina A&T University next year and to major in Computer Engineering.  He has been involved in Football while at James Kenan and he is also a member of the Beta Club and the National Technical Honor Society.  Julious serves as Assistant Superintendent at his church and says the most influential person in his life, other than his mother, has been his deacon at his church because of his humility.  Julious enjoys James Kenan High School because of the help he receives from teachers and staff members. His favorite teacher is Ms. Pender because she has encouraged him to do his very best.  The qualities he looks for in a friend are someone who shares his same interests and is helpful and respectful. In 10 years, Julious plans to own his own business fixing and selling computers.  Julious is the son of Angela Houston.

Manuel Montalvo-Garcia was recognized as North Duplin Jr/Sr High School’s Rotary Student of the Month.  Manuel was unable to be in attendance for the luncheon.

Rotary President Jesse Dowe stated “this is my favorite day when we get to recognize our students.  We are proud of each of you and wish you the best in your future endeavors.”
