DCS Holds Annual STEAMA Symposium
KENANSVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA- April 18, 2019 - On Friday, April 12, 2019, students from all five Duplin County high schools gathered at James Sprunt Community College for the annual DCS Student STEAMA Symposium. During this student-led event, 115 students presented their work on more than thirty collaborative projects including each STEAMA area: science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics, and agriculture. Projects included chicken embryology, apple cider and vinegar production, Mars colonization, 3-D printing, global change, and choral literature. During the symposium’s opening session, Max Craft, a 2015 graduate of Duplin County Schools, shared his STEAMA experiences as a student at North Carolina State University and reminded students that STEAMA is their choice, their passion, and their future.
Students from each high school also participated in the 2019 Innovation Challenge competition in which teams were challenged to improve upon an existing product to make it more efficient, more user-friendly, or more exciting. All five teams presented cleverly redesigned products, and the team from North Duplin Jr/Sr High School emerged victorious with their combination capo and cell phone holder for a guitar.
