Duplin Rotary Honors Students of the Month for May

KENANSVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA –  May 14, 2019- Duplin Rotary recognized Duplin County Schools students as Students of the Month for May at last week’s meeting.  Students, along with guests and Rotary members, enjoyed a luncheon at the Country Squire Restaurant in Warsaw before each student shared with the club his or her accomplishments and plans for the future.

Deoveon Harris is the Rotary Student of the Month for James Kenan High School.  Deveon enjoys playing Football for the Tigers and he plans to attend Averett University in Danville, Virginia next year and play Football while in college.  Deoveon hopes to major in Business Management. Mr. Hunter Dansby is Deoveon’s favorite teacher because he always pushed everyone to do their very best. In 10 years, Deoveon hopes to be a successful businessman owning many different types of businesses.  He plans to come home to Duplin County in the future. Deoveon is the son of Iris Carter and Deon Harris.

Rotary Student of the Month for North Duplin Jr./Sr. High School is Brenda Lopez-Hernandez. Brenda plans to attend East Carolina University to major in Nursing.  While in high school, she has been involved in the Beta club, Science club, and Brenda is also a Cross Country and Track team member. Besides her parents, the most influential person in her life has been her brother, Pablo.  Brenda enjoys attending North Duplin because of the small size. Everyone supports each other in every aspect whether it be in sports, academics, or personal life. Brenda’s favorite teacher is Mrs. Mendy Marcin. In addition to being a great teacher, Brenda says Mrs. Marcin is also a friend to everyone and has a positive influence on the lives of her students.  Brenda desires to make her family proud by finishing high school and going to college. In 10 years, she hopes to be back in Duplin County, working as a Nurse, and living close to family. Brenda is the daughter of Cristino Lopez-Lopez and Maria Chilel.

Manuel Montalvo-Garcia is the Rotary Student of the Month for April for North Duplin Jr./Sr. High School.  Manuel was unable to attend the April recognition. Manuel enjoys playing Soccer and was captain of the Soccer team this past year.  He is also involved in the Science Club and the Beta Club. The most influential person in his life has been his closest friend, Ovidio. What Manuel enjoys most about North Duplin is the small atmosphere and how there is a sense of community. Everyone is always very supportive.  Ms. Feng at JSCC is his favorite teacher because she always pushes him to do his very best and he has been inspired by her perseverance in her own life.  Manuel plans to attend UNC-Chapel Hill after high school and major in Education. In 10 years, he hopes to have a career in teaching and be living in Duplin County.  Manuel is the son of Felipe Montalvo and Veronica Garcia.

Areli Ramirez is the Rotary Student of the Month for Duplin Early College High School.  She is a member of the Beta Club and enjoys playing volleyball. The most influential person in her life is her sister Ana because Ana encourages and inspires her to follow her dreams.  Areli’s favorite teacher is Mr. Fussell at DECHS because he has been a wonderful teacher and friend. Areli enjoys attending Duplin Early College High School because all the school staff is very welcoming and everyone is like a family. Areli is the youngest of seven siblings and plans to attend Wayne Community College in the fall to in hopes of becoming a Dental Hygienist. In 10 years, she hopes to live in Duplin County and to have a career in Dental Hygiene. Areli is the daughter of Manuel Garcia and Rita Medina.

Mack Whitehurst is East Duplin High School’s Rotary Student of the Month.  Mack plans to attend James Sprunt Community College next year and once finished at JSCC, transfer to North Carolina State University to major in the Business/Marketing field.  What Mack likes most about East Duplin High School is that everyone is a family and the teachers are the best. Karen Jackson is his favorite teacher because he feels like she has done a lot to prepare her students for the next level of education and has truly gone the extra mile.  At East Duplin, Mack is involved in FCA, SGA, and is a member of the Health Sciences Academy and the winter Track team. He has also been on the Golf team all four years of high school. The most influential person in Mack’s life has been his grandfather because he always has a smile to offer no matter the situation.  In 10 years, Mack hopes to be working in the Business/Marketing field and living in Duplin County. Mack is the son of Kevin and Melinda Whitehurst.

Rotary President Jesse Dowe stated “this is my favorite day when we get to recognize our students.  I enjoy getting to help celebrate your accomplishments from the efforts you have made. We are proud of each of you and wish you the best in your future endeavors.”
