“Grow Your Own” Scholarship Recipient Honored by Board of Education
KENANSVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA – June 7, 2019- The “Grow Your Own” Scholarship was awarded to Makayla Newberne by the Board of Education during its meeting this week. Makayla will have a maximum of $20,000 (or $5,000 per year) paid to their college or university to be used to help them obtain their undergraduate education degree. One of the stipulations requires her to come back to Duplin County to teach.
Makayla is a senior at James Kenan High School where she has enjoyed cheering and playing softball. Makayla has been dedicated to her academics from early on and has served on the Beta Club all four years. Makayla has demonstrated leadership qualities and says that she wants to be a good influence in the lives of children and make a positive impact in their lives, the same way her teachers made a difference in her life. Makayla plans to attend N.C. A&T University in the fall to purse a degree in Child Development and Family Studies while obtaining a Birth to Kindergarten teaching license. Daren Tyndall, Executive Director for Human Resources, stated “we know Makayla will accomplish wonderful things in her college career and we are proud to have Makayla come back home to represent Duplin County Schools as a future teacher.”
