Duplin Rotary Honors December Students of the Month
Duplin Rotary recently recognized Duplin County Schools students as Students of the Month for December. At the December 12th meeting, students along with their guests and rotary club members enjoyed lunch at the Country Squire before sharing their accomplishments and future plans after high school.
Brenden Raynor is a senior at East Duplin High School. Next year, Brenden plans to attend Pembroke University and major in Seismology or Geophysics. His favorite extracurricular activities include football, soccer, and track. Brenden says that Scott Kennedy, a teacher at East High Duplin High School has been an influential person in his life. He says from early on, Mr. Kennedy has always taught him how to live for Christ. Brenden's favorite teacher is Mr. Kevin Strader and the qualities he looks for in a friend are funny, supportive and one that will stick by your side. In ten years, Brenden would like to be working as a seismologist and says that he couldn’t have come as far as he has if it had not been for the support and love of his family, school, and girlfriend.
Carlton Peterson is a senior at James Kenan High School. After graduation, Carlton plans to attend North Carolina Central University and major in Physical Therapy. Carlton says he chose NCCU because of his love for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Outside of regular school activities, he enjoys football, playing the drums and going hunting. Carlton says that one of the most influential people in his life has been Coach Will Clark because he has always been there to pick him up when he’s down. Carlton says, “one of my favorite teachers throughout school has been Ms. Miller because she took the time to give me extra tutoring when I needed it.” Qualities that Carlton looks for in a friend is being honest, respectful and trustworthy. Jesh’ay Smith is a senior at Duplin Early College High School where she is a member of the Beta Club, Health Sciences Academy, Vidant Volunteer Program, and serves as Vice President of the “I am that Girl” club. After high school, Jesh’ay plans to attend NC State University or UNC-Chapel Hill and major in Biomedical Engineering. Other than her parents, the most influential person in Jesh’ay’s life has been Ms. Raymond Green because she enlightens her about the real world and tells her how to deal with opinionated settings. Jesh’ay says that her two favorite teachers are Monet Hardison and Phyllis Blackmon because “ they push me to my maximum potential while offering me support when needed.” In ten years, Jesh’ay says she sees herself in a well paying engineering job, and possibly getting into modeling and developing her own cosmetic line.
Rose Martinez is a senior at North Duplin Jr/Sr High School where she is involved in HOSA and track. After high school, Rose plans to major in Biology and is interested in pursuing a career as a nurse practitioner or doctor. The most influential person in her life has been her sister Stephanie because of the challenges in life that they have pushed through together. Rose says that her favorite teacher is Debbie Rose because “she never fails to smile and ask me how I’m doing. She not only cares about my academics but cares for me as a person.” Rose is proud of her Catholic background and enjoys helping others. She plans to stay close to home so she can give back to the community she loves.
