Local FFA Member Awarded National American FFA Degree

INDIANAPOLIS (October 29, 2020 National FFA Organization) – Each year, the National FFA Organization honors FFA members who show the utmost dedication to the organization through their desire to develop their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

The American FFA Degree is bestowed upon a select group of students in recognition of their years of academic and professional excellence. This year 4,136 American Degrees were awarded.

Dallas Barwick and Victor Hernandez, both members of the North Duplin FFA chapter in Mt. Olive, NC, were awarded the American FFA Degree at the 93rd National FFA Convention & Expo Oct. 27-29, held virtually.

Sponsored by Case IH, Elanco Animal Health and Syngenta, the award recognizes demonstrated ability and outstanding achievements in agricultural business, production, processing or service programs.

To be eligible, FFA members must have earned and productively invested $10,000 through a supervised agricultural experience (SAE) program in which they own their own business or hold a professional position as an employee. Recipients must also complete 50 hours community service and demonstrate outstanding leadership abilities and civic involvement through completion of a long list of FFA and community activities.  Less than one percent of FFA members achieve the American FFA Degree.

Dallas and Victor both served as FFA officers while enrolled at North Duplin Jr Sr, Victor as Vice President and Dallas as Sentinel in their senior years. Both young men committed themselves to the promotion of Agriculture and FFA while serving as members.

Victor joined FFA in his Freshman year at North Duplin and he competed in Livestock Evaluation, Meats Evaluation, and the Agriculture Mechanics Career Development Events (CDEs). He participated in all fundraisers and used his senior project to renovate and paint the school agriculture mechanics shop. His SAE centered around construction, where he worked for his Uncle learning the trade. Victor now works with Butterball LLC in Mount Olive.

Dallas joined his Sophomore year and competed in Agriculture Mechanics where we placed 3rd individually in the Southeast Region. Dallas served as an FFA ambassador for North Duplin, regularly visiting and presenting about agriculture at North Duplin Elementary and Mustard Seed Christian Academy in Faison. He also served as a peer tutor for the agriculture program helping the then advisor Lynn Marshburn prepare labs and teach students. Dallas’ SAE centered around production farming. He currently works for Wayne County Waste Industries.

Both men earned their State FFA Degree at the NC FFA Convention in 2019. They exemplified what it means to be an FFA member, always being available to help, representing agriculture and FFA with pride, and educating others. They are two of only seven North Duplin FFA American Degree Recipients in the program’s sixty-five years and two of three in the last twenty years. They continue to support FFA and advocate for agriculture through their jobs and personal values.

Each recipient of the American FFA Degree receives a gold American FFA Degree key and certificate after being recognized at the national convention.
