Students Explore Options at DCS College and Career Fair
The Duplin County Schools Career and College Fair, an annual event held at the Duplin Events Center, was an excellent opportunity last week for 10th grade students across the county to increase their knowledge of future career and college options. The students, business and industry professionals, and college representatives spent quality time together as the correlation among academics, potential careers, and pathways were reinforced. Over 700 10th graders were in attendance.
As has been the format for a few years, colleges were integrated within the career booths. Each booth was grouped by Career Cluster, which is a grouping of occupations based on commonalities. The intent was to help students make the connection between their career interests and the educational path needed to achieve in that type of career, whether it be through a post-secondary credential, a certificate program, an Associate’s Degree, or a Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree from a college or university.
Prior to the event, students selected specific career clusters from which they would like to hear presentations. During each session, students learned more about their career and college interests by gathering information regarding education and training requirements, expected salary ranges, expected opportunities for employment, and college programs. Approximately 80 employers and college program representatives were in attendance for this event.
Superintendent Dr. Austin Obasohan shared, “On behalf of our Board of Education and our students, I want to thank the Duplin County Partnership for Career Planning, Mrs. Rebekah Ivey and district staff members who have worked hard behind the scenes to make this day a huge success for our students.” Dr. Obasoahn expressed his sincere gratitude for the business and industry and college representatives who took the time out of their busy schedules to share this day with the students. “Thank you for your continued commitment in helping our students prepare for their future.”
