Crayons on Campus Gets Kindergartners Excited About College
Recently, kindergartners from across the district had the opportunity to experience college life by participating in the Crayons on Campus event held on the campus of James Sprunt Community College. This two-day event hosted around 1,000 kindergartners and excitement began as soon as students stepped off of the bus.
Upon arrival, students were issued their very own I.D. badge and then had a chance to discover different career programs available at James Sprunt. Students toured the campus led by staff members and attended various career sessions ranging from, nursing, health and fitness, nutrition, advertising and design, cosmetology, electrical and more. Hands-on activities included testing lung strength by seeing how far they could blow a cotton ball across the table and learning how to use a stethoscope to listen to their heartbeat. They also had a chance to showcase their art skills by coloring the JSCC Spartan mascot. Students were very excited to visit the barber school and get a first-hand look at what it takes to be a barber, as well as visit the campus gym to practice push-ups and take a turn on the punching bag. After students had completed their scheduled tours for the day, they gathered in Monk auditorium to watch a performance of “Character Matters” presented by students from Duplin Early College High School. Excitement was certainly in the air as students got a unique experience of life on campus. It was evident that a lot of work went on behind the scenes to make this event not only special to the students, but based on their smiles, one they may never forget.
Superintendent Dr. Obasohan shared, “This is truly a special day for our kindergartners as they get the opportunity to visit James Sprunt Community College. This experience sets the tone for them to begin thinking about what they want to be when they grow up and once that spark is lit inside of them, it is our job to make that happen.” Dr. Obasohan shared his sincere appreciation for Dr. Jay Carraway, Mrs. Ashley Graham and the entire staff at James Sprunt Community College who helped to make Crayons on Campus an awesome experience for kindergarten students across the district.
