Suzie Summerlin is WITN Teacher of the Week
GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Meet Suzie Summerlin, WITN’s Teacher of the Week.
Summerlin teaches Counseling and Mental Health at East Duplin High School. Her class is an extracurricular course under Family and Consumer Science, and it’s offered to students in 9th, 10th, and 12th grade. Summerlin says the goal of the class is to allow students to get to know themselves and learn different coping strategies when facing what life throws at them.
According to her nomination, her class is very helpful to have when facing the real world. She has worked with the Duplin County School system for the past five years. At first, Summerlin was a substitute but now serves the school as a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher.
She is a part of the pilot program for the curriculum, making her one of 14 teachers in the state instructing the class. Summerlin says the class is broken into two sections: the first is tailored to students getting to know themselves, and the second expands to general psychology.
Her nomination from a student says in part that “she has been such a relief to have as a teacher... and she is such a bundle of joy to have as a teacher.”
Summerlin volunteers in her community through the middle and high school youth program at Pathway Church in Beulaville with her husband, who is a youth pastor. She says she loves Jesus and wants others to see Him through her life.
