      SEal Student Advisory Committee
The 2015-16 Superintendent's Student Advisory Committee

KENANSVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA – September 29, 2015 – Student representatives from each school throughout Duplin County Schools gathered in the O.P. Johnson Board of Education Building conference room for the first meeting of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Committee this year.  For five years the committee has met regularly with Superintendent Dr. Austin Obasohan to provide him with the students’ perspective of Duplin County Schools.

“This year I am honored to work with another fantastic group of student leaders,” said Superintendent Dr. Austin Obasohan.  “They are forward-thinking and motivated.  In their very first meeting they wanted to find a way to work together to give back to our community.  We have scheduled a planning meeting to explore ways to do just that.”

Each year the superintendent asks principals to select students to serve on the committee.  This year’s representatives are Romina Valdes-Daussa and Carson Price from B.F. Grady Elementary Schools, Hope Whitley from Beulaville Elementary School, Evelyn Thompson from Charity Middle School, Terry Rogers from Chinquapin Elementary School, David Palomo from Duplin Early College High School, Ashton Ballard and Lilly Wooten from East Duplin High School, Yadia Soria from E.E. Smith Middle School, Diego Benitez from James Kenan High School, Aiden Venecia from Kenansville Elementary School, Noel Rangel from North Duplin Elementary School, Jamilyn Wallace and Benjamin Justice from North Duplin Jr/Sr High School, Evelyn Gamez-Gomez from Rose Hill-Magnolia Elementary School, Jace Turner from Wallace Elementary School, Miranda Basden from Wallace-Rose Hill High School, Chloe Grady from Warsaw Elementary School, and Aiden Reaves from Warsaw Middle School.

During the first meeting the students elect a lead student and grade-level chairpersons to provide leadership for the committee. This year’s Lead Student is Miranda Basden from Wallace-Rose Hill High School. The Elementary School Chairperson is Carson Price from B.F. Grady Elementary School. The Middle School Chairperson is Hope Whitley from Beulaville Elementary School. The High School Chairperson is David Palomo from Duplin Early College High School.

“I want the world to know how blessed we are to have these students.  They are the voice for all of the students in our county and they take their roles very seriously. Our community would be so proud if they had the opportunity to sit and talk with these students,” said Superintendent Obasohan.  “They are eager and anxious to serve and they are such a blessing.  These student representatives are going to hold us all to high standards and they will do everything they can to ensure all students graduate ready for success in college, career, and life.  Most importantly they are willing and eager to provide input from the voices that matter the most- the students.”
