Chinquapin Elementary School recently welcomed North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs Secretary Jocelyn Mitnaul Mallette for a special visit celebrating support for students, families, and the school’s military-connected community.

During the visit, Secretary Mallette presented a generous donation of school supplies collected by the North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. The donation was part of an initiative led by North Carolina Governor Josh Stein, who encouraged members of his Cabinet to participate in school supply drives to help students across the state begin the school year prepared for success.

Secretary Mallette selected Chinquapin Elementary as the recipient of her department’s school supply drive, providing resources that will directly support students and families throughout the school community.

Beyond delivering supplies, Secretary Mallette spent time connecting with school administrators, support staff, and military-connected families. The visit provided an opportunity to learn more about Chinquapin Elementary, hear from members of the school community, and better understand the experiences and needs of students and families.

“We are grateful to Secretary Jocelyn Mitnaul Mallette and the North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs for choosing Chinquapin Elementary to receive this generous donation,” said Chinquapin Elementary Principal Brittany Knowles. “The support of our state leaders and community partners makes a meaningful difference for our students and families. These supplies will help ensure that our students have the tools they need to learn, grow, and succeed.”

The visit reflects the importance of partnerships that connect schools with leaders and organizations committed to serving North Carolina’s students and families. For Chinquapin Elementary, the generosity of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs represents more than a donation of supplies—it is a meaningful investment in students and a reminder of the strength that comes from working together to support every child.

Duplin County Schools extends its appreciation to Secretary Mallette and the North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs for their generosity and for taking the time to visit, listen, and connect with the Chinquapin Elementary community.
