Kenansville, NC - This November, high school students across Duplin County Schools participated in the “Reality of Money” simulation sponsored by the State Employees Credit Union (SECU). This engaging financial literacy program, hosted at each of the district’s high schools, provided students with a hands-on experience in managing personal finances and making critical life decisions.
During the simulation, students were “transformed” into young adults with careers, monthly incomes, and real-world financial responsibilities such as paying for housing, transportation, insurance, and more. They navigated various stations, making choices about their spending priorities while balancing unexpected expenses like car repairs. Volunteers added to the realism by role-playing as vendors and financial advisors, offering guidance, and occasionally delivering financial surprises to reinforce the importance of budgeting.
The event aimed to teach students essential financial concepts, including the impact of higher education on earning potential, the consequences of poor credit, and the importance of living within their means. By participating, students gained a deeper appreciation for saving money and preparing for a financially secure future.
"Engaging our students in the Reality of Money event allows them to connect classroom learning with real-world scenarios," said Superintendent Dr. Obasohan. "We are incredibly grateful to Mr. Kenny Barrett, SECU Kenansville Vice President and Branch Manager, and his team for continuing to provide this innovative program to our district. Additionally, we extend our thanks to our dedicated DCS staff and volunteers who made this valuable learning opportunity possible for our students."
Through the “Reality of Money” simulation, Duplin County Schools and SECU are equipping students with the financial literacy skills needed to navigate adulthood successfully, empowering them to make informed decisions for a brighter future.
