Crayons on Campus by Lindsay Skidmore
Kenansville, NC - First graders from schools across the district recently experienced a memorable day of college life by attending the annual Crayons on Campus event at James Sprunt Community College. Excitement was in the air as students, full of energy and anticipation, stepped off the buses and onto the college campus.
The day kicked off with a warm welcome from the college staff, setting an enthusiastic tone for the day. Students then embarked on guided campus tours, exploring various career pathways with hands-on activities led by college staff members. These sessions highlighted careers in nursing, health and fitness, cosmetology, science, agriculture, electrical work, and more.
One of the highlights of the event was when each student received an official college ID badge, adding to the authenticity of their college experience. The students eagerly visited the campus library and the agriculture education classrooms, where they even planted seeds to learn about the possibilities in agriculture. The DCS Duplin T.E.A.C.H Academy students from Duplin Early College High School worked with students on an art project that showcased what students want to be when they grow up.
The day concluded with students enjoying lunch together on the college grounds, a fitting end to a memorable experience filled with exploration and fun.
Superintendent Dr. Obasohan shared, “Crayons on Campus is a long-standing tradition that offers our young students a unique glimpse into college life and potential future careers. We are deeply grateful to everyone involved, from Dr. Jay Carraway, and Mrs. Ashley Graham, to the dedicated James Sprunt Community College staff and volunteers, for making this event a truly unforgettable experience for our first graders.”
