Wilmington, NC - On Tuesday, March 11, thirty-seven students from the Health Sciences Academy, representing all five district high schools, participated in an immersive healthcare exploration event at the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s College of Health and Human Services (CHHS). This unique experience provided students with valuable insights into healthcare careers, public health leadership, and pre-professional pathways.

The day began with interactive public health leadership exercises led by Dr. Sheri Leavens, encouraging students to think critically about community health initiatives and leadership roles in the field. Students then explored UNCW’s pre-health programs and scholarship opportunities, gaining a deeper understanding of the academic and professional pathways available to them.

A highlight of the event was the exclusive tour of Veteran’s Hall, home to UNCW’s state-of-the-art simulation labs. Students had the opportunity to experience hands-on learning in a high-tech training environment, furthering their understanding of real-world medical scenarios and patient care practices.

Beyond academics, students enjoyed a guided campus tour and a meal at Waggoner Dining Hall, offering them a glimpse into student life at UNCW. This comprehensive visit provided a well-rounded experience, allowing students to envision themselves as future healthcare professionals and college students.

A special thank you to UNCW’s Wesley Porter, Dr. Sheri Leavens, and the staff at UNCW’s CHHS and the Coastal Kitchen for their dedication in making this event possible. Their commitment to providing engaging and educational experiences continues to inspire our Health Sciences Academy students as they prepare for careers in healthcare.
