Approximately 50 middle school students spent the week exploring future career possibilities during the annual STEAMA Camp, held June 1–5 at James Sprunt Community College. The camp provided rising sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students with engaging, hands-on learning experiences aligned with high-demand career pathways, including Agricultural Technology, Business and Information Technology, Trades and Industry, and Health Sciences and Public Safety.

Throughout the week, students participated in interactive lessons and activities led by staff from Duplin County Schools and James Sprunt Community College. The camp was designed to help students explore their interests while developing skills connected to future educational and career opportunities.

A highlight of the week was Wednesday’s industry engagement experience, during which students traveled to local businesses and industry partners to see career pathways in action. These field experiences allowed students to connect classroom learning with real-world applications and gain valuable insight into the opportunities available within Duplin County and the surrounding region.  Students toured Design Mode Cabinetry, House of Raeford, Nash Johnson & Sons, DCS Maintenance and Bus Garage, Valicy Gaming and ECU Health Duplin.

The week concluded with a parent showcase of learning on Friday, where students shared projects, demonstrations, and reflections from their camp experiences. Families had the opportunity to see firsthand the creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration students developed throughout the week.

“STEAMA Camp allows students to discover new interests, build confidence, and see how their learning connects to future careers,” said Susi Burger, DCS Career Development and Work-Based Learning Coordinator. “Through hands-on experiences, industry engagement, and partnerships with community leaders, students begin to see the many pathways available to them and the possibilities that exist right here in Duplin County.”

The college’s partnership continues to provide meaningful learning opportunities that help students explore careers, develop workplace-ready skills, and envision successful futures.
